holga.jpgLet's face it - we live in a digital world. From web sites like this and most of today's modern cameras - all digital. Technology has advanced photography leaps and bounds and we are all better photograhers because of it. But really? Some might think so, but for the most part, we don't. Photography isn't about megapixels and fast lenses, it's about capturing an image - plain and simple.

Toycamera.com is a web site about creating a photographic image out of a really really crappy camera, or a "toy" if you will. Over 10 years ago it started with the original "Great Lakes Area Plastic Camera Group (AKA "GAK") which was started by Harvey Seeley and Kurt Stepnitz. Even from those early days, the philosophy remains the same - an inclusive group of toy camera enthusiasts who want nothing more than to share some images, ideas, and a few laughs.

article_title_diana.jpgToday, toycamera.com is run by Michael Barnes out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. After many site redesigns and new backend systems (and surely more to come), the site today offers anyone around the world the ability to register, upload a gallery, submit an article, participate on the forum, and have fun - no membership fees necessary.

Toycamera.com is funded in part by Light Leaks magazine (which was created and founded by members of the site, and still run by current members of this web site), as well as proceeds derived from our Store sales.

So if you've got a desire to break out of the norm and get back to the basics of photography, pick up a cheap plastic camera and join us!

I received a Holga Toy as a gift from my brother - Does anyone know of a Chicago Toy Photo Group that I can join?

toy vs hasselblad

Indeed, it is all about the image. I have "Holga vs Hasselblad" and "Diana vs Ansco Speedex Apotar lens" comparison here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25402956@N03/, and honestly, I think it is more about image than the megapixels or the resolution. Great initiative and site, cheers, 6x9.

I am interested in learning more about lomography and toy cameras. Is there a store in the Minneapolis St. Paul, MN area? How do you learn how to use them and what you need to buy, where to develop, etc?
